Teardrop by Lauren Kate

The much anticipated new series from YA author Laruen Kate will hit the shelfs in bookshelf on the 22/10/13. I have been lucky enough to be given a ARC to read and review. As a fan of Lauren Kate’s previous work, I was very excited to read this one and see what she would do with the myth of Atlantis.

Teardrop is the story of, a seemingly normal teenage girl Eureka’s who is struggling with her fragile mental health after, the breakup of her family unit, her father remarrying and a heartbreaking death in a freak accident in which she has survived. As a result Eureka has become withdrawn and lives with survivor’s guilt. As Eureka tries to deal with the world around her the best she can, her life is changed again when she meets Ander.

Ander is not quite what he seems and has a habit of appearing and disappearing. As a character, he is intriguing and dynamic. He has a mysterious vibe going on throughout the story which is aided by his appearing and disappearing .

The Visual images throughout this story, help to ground the reader and feel part of the story. At times I felt like I was there with the characters in that scene feeling the same things they felt, seeing the same things they saw. I am so excited for the next instalment of this series.

Teardrop is an incredible start to what promises to be an amazing series. Dynamic characters and a great story. If you are looking for something different, if you are a fan of Kate’s or have never read anything by her pick up Teardrop when it released on October 22 2013.

Remember Never ever cry.

Never, ever cry. . . . Eureka Boudreaux’s mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn’t, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn’t know Eureka’s darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined. From Lauren Kate comes an epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away

Book trailer:

Chapter 1:

A teaser

The glass door behind me opened, and I spilled my coffee, caught off guard by the unexpected guest.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” Aiden said, taking a seat next to me.

“This chair is too small for the two of us,” I said, moving to give him more space.

He looked at me, a cunning smile playing on his lips. “Maybe I want to be as close to you as possible.”

“Yeah, so I thought,” I said, watching him. His hair wasn’t combed, a five-o’clock shadow covered his cheeks and chin, but he still looked perfect. Like a man that every woman would love to see first thing in the morning. He was wearing jeans and white T-shirt, his feet were bare.

“Isn’t it too early for a coffee?” he asked, nodding towards the cup in my hands.

“No, it’s just the right time to have it. Want some?”

I thought he would take my cup and take a few sips. Instead, he put his palms around mine and brought the cup to his lips, making me move closer; his eyes never left mine.

“Mmm … you are right. It’s a perfect time for a cup of coffee.” Then his gaze slipped to my lips, and he leaned forward. “What about a morning kiss?” he asked softly.

I shook my head. “Bad timing.”

Aiden laughed quietly, taking another sip of my coffee. “Last night you didn’t mind kissing me.”

I stopped breathing at once. “What?” There was no way he knew about my dream.

“And I remember how hard you tried to make me stay.”

No freaking way….

“And you almost succeeded. My desire to stay was beyond understanding.”

I couldn’t believe it was real. “You are kidding me, right?”

Aiden frowned, staring back at me. “No.”

“So it wasn’t a dream?”

“A what?” He chuckled, as he put my cup on the floor, near the chair.

“Oh, no….” I closed my eyes, feeling the predatory blush covering me from head to toe.

“You thought it was a dream?” Aiden put a finger under my chin. “Look at me, Megan. Do I look like a man who enjoys seducing half-asleep women?”

I desperately wanted to sink under the floor.

“Answer the question, Megs.”

Aiden rose to his feet, his eyes flashed mischievously.

But there was one thing I wanted to know. “Why did you leave?” I asked, meeting his stare.

He put his hands on both sides of the chair, leaning over me. “Because I’m sure that making love with you can’t be a quiet moment. And I didn’t want your parents or brother to kick me out of this house in the middle of the night.”

My body ached pleasantly at his words, but I didn’t want Aiden to see my excitement. I tried to keep calm, even though he was too close to ignore the heat coming from his body. I was too ashamed to say a word. That’s why it was a surprise for both of us when I stood up and slowly wrapped my arms around Aiden’s waist.

“Two can play this game, you know?” I said. And then I kissed him on the lips.

They still tasted like coffee and cream, and it was the first time since our night ‘meeting’ when I realized how much I actually needed that morning kiss.

Aiden put his palm at the back of my neck and deepened the kiss, driving me totally crazy. How on earth was I supposed to keep calm for three days, when every second with him felt like pure torture? A very sweet and intoxicating torture, my mind added. Damn….

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by author Lini Taylor.

Days of Blood and Starlight is the fantastic sequel to the very well loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone by author Lini Taylor.

In Daughter of Smoke and Bone we met Karou and were introduced to her world.. Karou learns the heart breaking truth about who she really is and what has become of those she loves. In Days of Blood and Starlight we join Karou as she struggles with her identity and the role she must now play in both worlds.

At times the first half of this story does feel a little slow, and does bounce from character to character. The second half is more energetic and great plot advancement that make you forget it was even slow in the first place.. I was especially suprised by a few of the plot happenings that Laini decided to add in this sequel.

Having learned who she really was, and what her world consists of, Karou is clearly not the same young, carefree teenager she once was. She has had to make some tough decision. The character growth is there and it makes complete sense with story developments we went through. I love how she wants to make everything right for not only the people she loved but the people she knew. Even if the signed her death warrant. You can easily understand where she is coming from and sympathize to her situation. The side characters, the monsters, the creations, everyone is so alive in this novel.

We see Karou at her most vulnerable and, at the same time, her most strong -mentally at least. Each and every character we come across, from Akiva to Hazael and Liraz, his siblings, to Zuzanna and Mik, all experience some type of growth and change throughout this book

This book will have you on the edge of your seat.

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream
