Maresi (The Red Abbey Chronicles #1) by Maria Turtschaninoff

Maresi came to the Red Abbey when she was thirteen, in the Hunger Winter. Before then, she had only heard rumours of its existence in secret folk tales. In a world where girls aren’t allowed to learn or do as they please, an island inhabited solely by women sounded like a fantasy. But now Maresi is here, and she knows it is real. She is safe.

Then one day Jai tangled fair hair, clothes stiff with dirt, scars on her back arrives on a ship. She has fled to the island to escape terrible danger and unimaginable cruelty. And the men who hurt her will stop at nothing to find her.

Now the women and girls of the Red Abbey must use all their powers and ancient knowledge to combat the forces that wish to destroy them. And Maresi, haunted by her own nightmares, must confront her very deepest, darkest fears.

A story of friendship and survival, magic and wonder, beauty and terror, Maresi will grip you and hold you spellbound.

I have to admit that Maresi  for me was an impulse buy it was brought on purely on the what the cover look like

I enjoyed the overall story and the fact the focus and message was about women being strong, independent and in control. I also like the gact  that the characters were not wanting for a man to save them. They save themself.

Welcome to the Red Abbey, a sanctuary built by 8 women, sisters fleeing from persecution far away from a world where education is awarded only to men, and where their fate is not theirs to master.

Any new novice coming to the Red Abbey, will not only be granted protection, but will also share into the teachings of an ancient and sacred magic now long lost to the world of man.

Abby is an island Oasis for women. Women from all over cometo the Abby some for saftey and some come to learn skills to take back to there homes.

The island holds its own secrets.
Whenever a man set foot on the island bad things seem to happen and it’s very rarely that they do, as the knowlage of the island has spread.

If you are looking for a story about mystery, secrets and  strong women. This is the book for you
